Midmark Support Fund for Family Medicine

An A/V capture system was designed by the Ohio State Medical Center IS Center for Video Services and installed at the OSU Family Medicine at Thomas Rardin. It includes a single, domed, ceiling-mounted camera plus ceiling-mounted microphone in each examination room, configured to cover the entire room. Each room’s camera and microphone are hard wired to a central control rack in the preceptors’ room. Faculty members, as system users, are able to access live room feeds, as well as recorded materials via a web browser interface using any personal computer approved to be a part of the Ohio State University Medical Center network. At present due to bandwidth limitations, users must be at the Rardin location to access the system. Access to the system is controlled by a username and password log-in system.

The principal use of the A/V capture system is to observe physician trainees interacting with patients in real time or to capture the interactions for delayed use. Faculty preceptors use the system to teach principles of patient interaction plus to determine if the physician trainees are progressing appropriately in the development of patient-related competencies.
